Mheibes: From Theory to Thrill in the Classroom!

During the holy month of Ramadan, a unique and engaging game called Mheibes (محيبس) is traditionally played, particularly in the Arab Mashriq, especially in Iraq. Similar to the English game Up Jenkins, Mheibes involves two teams and a hidden ring (محبس), creating a thrilling atmosphere of anticipation and strategy. Read more about it here.

To truly immerse themselves in this rich cultural tradition, this Ramdan, the students in Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic II first read about the theoretical aspects of Mheibes. They learned about its history, rules, and significance, gaining a deeper understanding of its place in Ramadan celebrations. Then, they brought their newfound knowledge to life by playing the game themselves! The classroom buzzed with excitement as teams tried to outsmart each other, searching for the hidden ring. Whether the ring was discovered or not, the joy of participating and learning about this cultural game filled the room. This hands-on experience provided a valuable connection between classroom learning and real-world cultural practices.
