The Yale Purvoo Center and the Yale Center on Language Study hosted a student-centered event, Language Tasting, on Friday, October 25th. The Yale Arabic Program was delighted to participate.
The Egyptian Dialect session was a huge hit, drawing over 20 eager students. Led by Professor Randa Muhammed, the session explored the importance and significance of learning Arabic dialects. Along with a taste of Ma’mul (a famous type of sweet in Arabic Speaking Countries), Students had the opportunity to practice essential greetings, self-introductions, and even ordering tea in Egyptian Arabic and they enthusiastically engaged in basic conversations with one another.
Through short video clips from YouTube and TikTok, Professor Randa Muhammed highlighted the cultural significance of tea in Egyptian society, explaining its historical and social role.
As the session concluded, students expressed interest in future learning opportunities for both Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Arabic. They sought guidance on how the Yale Arabic Program could support their linguistic journey. The session was undoubtedly a success, providing a taste of Egyptian Arabic culture and language. The Arabic Language Program at Yale offers the Egyptian Dialect during the Fall semester where the journey can continue.
